Karen Shakhnazarov is one of the leading figures in Russian filmmaking

Shakhnazarov's work is marked by a sharp sense of the present, an ability to highlight what is most important in the context of time, and a talent for both entertaining the audience and making them think and empathize. Karen Shakhnazarov's films are well-known to both domestic and international audiences and have received prestigious awards at film forums and festivals.

Karen Shakhnazarov's films have received over seventy international and national awards; they have twice competed at the Cannes Film Festival, three times been nominated for the American Academy Award "Oscar" ("Zerograd", "Ward No. 6", "White Tiger"), and have represented the USSR and Russia at numerous international film festivals.

Biography

  • 1975

    Graduated from the Directing Faculty of VGIK Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography(workshop of Igor Talankin) Specialized in film directing Graduation film "Step Lively, Maestro!" Started working as a first assistant director at Mosfilm studio

  • 1975-1976

    Military Service

    First assistant director at Mosfilm Studios

    Winner of the Boris Polevoy Literary Award for the story "Messenger Boy"

    Film director at Mosfilm Studios

  • 1986

    Winner of the Lenin Komsomol Prize for developing the genre of musical comedy in the films "We are from Jazz" and "Winter Evening in Gagra"

  • 1987

    Artistic director of the Creative Association "Start" at Mosfilm studio, which was renamed to studio "Courier" in 1990.

  • 1988

    Winner of the Vasilyev Brothers State Prize of the RSFSR for the creation of the feature film "Courier"

  • from 1991

    Currently serves as the artistic director of the "Courier" studio of the Mosfilm Film Group.

    Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation
